Frequently asked questions
What is Markdown Optimizer?
A Shopify app by Sparande that reduces prices on a schedule based on how long each product has been listed. You set the ladder of steps once; each product moves down it on its own clock, and every step is checked before it is applied.
Which products does a ladder apply to?
Every product in your catalogue, each on its own clock. Products listed at different times sit at different steps of the same ladder, and new products join automatically. You can exclude individual products at any time.
Does it work on products that never sell?
Yes. Steps fire on how long a product has been listed, not on sales, so one-of-a-kind and slow-moving stock are handled like anything else.
Is each step a discount off the last one?
No. Every step is a percentage off the original price, so a 30% step is 30% off the original, whatever the previous step was.
What happens to a product that is already on sale?
It is held for your review on the Pricing reviews page rather than discounted on top of its sale. If you approve the price to calculate from, its own compare-at price is left exactly as it is.
What if I change a price by hand while a ladder is running?
The next step for that product is checked against the price it expected to find. If the price in Shopify has changed, the step is refused rather than overwriting your edit, and the reason is recorded.
Can I set a margin floor?
Yes. Your margin floor is your cost per item, or cost plus a percentage you choose. Every step is checked against it, and a step that would sell a product below it is not applied. A separate floor for each step is not available. Products without a cost are counted and shown to you before your ladder starts.
Can I price different markets differently?
Not yet. Per-market pricing is not available yet, so every ladder runs on your base prices in every market.
What happens at the end of a ladder?
Mark a step as final and products stop there: no deeper reduction follows, and nothing else happens to the product.
What happens when I stop a ladder?
No further step is applied. Prices already reduced stay as they are until you put them back with Remove active markdown changes, which restores original prices product by product.
Will shoppers see that a product is marked down?
The price they see is the reduced price. With the theme app embeds switched on, product and collection pages also show a sale badge, and the app checks that the embeds are on.
What data does Markdown Optimizer read, and does it store customer data?
It reads products, variants, listing dates, prices, costs and stock. It requests no customer scope and stores no customer names, emails, phone numbers, addresses or order histories.
Why would I grant order access?
Only if your store uses suggestions: the Sparande platform then counts units ordered per variant over the last 30 days, and only that count reaches the app. The markdown ladder never needs it.
Who on my team can start a ladder?
Anyone whose role has permission to start one. Drafting and starting are separate permissions, and steps can be set to wait for approval, so a colleague can prepare a ladder that someone else signs off.
What happens to my prices if I uninstall?
Shopify revokes the app's access the moment it is uninstalled, so reduced prices would stay reduced. Run Remove active markdown changes first; it restores original prices and tells you what it could not restore.
