What Shopify stores use Markdown Optimizer for
Every use below starts with a problem merchants describe to us and ends with what the app actually does about it. If your situation is not here, the FAQ and help pages cover the details.
AI suggests. Deterministic maths decides.
The ladder is your schedule and involves no AI. Where suggestions are switched on, AI only finds places a ladder could work harder, and deterministic, quantitative mathematics verifies each candidate across the shop before you see it.
- AI only finds the possibilities. AI never sets a price
- Deterministic, quantitative mathematics checks every step against your margin floor
- Nothing runs until you have previewed a ladder and started it
End-of-season clearance without the end-of-season scramble
The problem: a seasonal range arrives in waves, and by the time anyone plans the clearance sale the early arrivals have been sitting for months while the late ones have barely been seen. One store-wide cut treats them all the same.
What Markdown Optimizer does: each product steps down from its own listing date, so early arrivals reach their first markdown first and late arrivals get their full-price window. A final step fixes the lowest price in advance, and the week-ahead view shows exactly what will change before it does.
Slow-moving and one-of-a-kind stock
The problem: products that rarely sell give velocity-based tools nothing to work with, so they sit untouched and quietly become dead stock.
What Markdown Optimizer does: steps fire on how long a product has been listed, not on its sales, so a one-off piece is marked down on schedule like anything else. No sales history is needed to run a ladder.
Protecting margin when costs are missing
The problem: many catalogues have products without a cost per item. Any automatic markdown on those products is blind to margin.
What Markdown Optimizer does: where a cost exists, a step below cost is refused and the reason is shown. Before a ladder starts, the app counts the products with no cost and asks you to choose: let them be marked down without a cost check, or leave them alone. Until you decide, nothing uncosted moves.
Markdowns a team can sign off
The problem: in larger teams the person who plans a markdown is not always the person who is allowed to approve it, and price changes need a record.
What Markdown Optimizer does: drafting a ladder and starting one are separate permissions; any step can wait for approval; approval chains choose which roles must sign off; and every version and every applied step is recorded with who and why. On Enterprise (10,001+ products, not offered yet), Microsoft Entra ID decides who can use the app, groups map to roles, and people are provisioned and deprovisioned from your directory.
Trying a suggested ladder without risking the one that works
The problem: an AI idea about pricing is only useful if you can check it before it touches your store.
What Markdown Optimizer does: where suggestions are switched on for a store, AI finds where a ladder could work harder and the Sparande platform's Decision Science verifies the candidate across every product in the shop. It is shown as Suggested, never active. Accepting it saves a draft; your current ladder keeps running until you preview the draft and activate it yourself.
Stores that already run sales and discount codes
The problem: automatic markdowns layered on products that are already on sale, or on top of a site-wide code, can take prices far lower than intended.
What Markdown Optimizer does: a product already showing a sale price waits on the Pricing reviews page instead of being discounted again. When a checkout discount may stack on a markdown, the product is flagged. If another Sparande app is already pricing a product, the step is held and checked again the next day.
A clean way back to full price
The problem: when a markdown tool is removed, the prices it changed usually stay changed.
What Markdown Optimizer does: Remove active markdown changes restores original prices product by product, leaves any product whose price you have since changed exactly as it is, and only reports a product as restored once the platform confirms it. Run it before uninstalling.
When it is not the right tool
- If you need different markdowns per market or currency: per-market pricing is not available yet, and ladders run on base prices.
- If you need a different margin floor for each step: that is not available. One margin floor applies to every step: cost, or cost plus a percentage you choose.
- If you want a one-day promotion for a particular audience: a Shopify discount code is the better tool.
- If you need a report of revenue recovered by each markdown: the app does not measure sales after a markdown.
